In April 1941 the German army occupied Yugoslavia. The civilian administration of the region of Vardar Macedonia was given to Bulgaria while Germany retained the military control over the region. On March 1st, 1941 the German Army crossed Danube River and entered Bulgaria. Later the same day Bulgaria was forced to sign the Tripartite Pact and become ally of Germany, Italy and Japan. By April 18th the German army conquered Yugoslavia and Greece. In May Germany placed Trace (part of Northern Greece) and Macedonia back under Bulgarian administration. Trace and Macedonia were territories lost by Bulgaria during the WWI. This archival footage shows how the Bulgarian troops were welcomed in the town of Ohrid, Macedonia in May 1941.
